Aurelinna Casino

The casino in the weighing hall gallery

One room on the first floor of Aurelinna, open in the evening to hotel guests and other visitors who are 18 or over.

Where it is

Up the granite stair

Aurelinna Casino sits in the gallery along one side of the old weighing hall, on the first floor of this building. From the lobby you take the granite stair, worn into shallow curves by a century of clerks, or the lift right beside it. Either way you reach the casino from inside the hotel, without crossing a courtyard or stepping outdoors. It has always been part of the building.

The weighmaster's office used to look down on the weighing floor from this gallery, and the balustrade is the original iron. From the tables you can see the dining room ceiling below and, through the tall windows at the river end, the water.

The room

A few tables and a bar

This is a small casino, and we'd rather say so than have anyone arrive expecting a hall. It has a few tables, a bar along the inner wall and some seats for people who've come to watch. On a full Saturday there might be sixty people in the casino; on a Tuesday in November, perhaps twelve.

The casino opens at 18:00 and the last table closes at 02:00, except on Friday and Saturday, when it closes later. It doesn't run during the day, and in the first two weeks of January, when the house is quiet, the gallery is sometimes closed altogether.

The bar serves the same list as the Lantern Bar downstairs, and staff will bring a drink to your table. Drinks aren't part of play, and none are complimentary.

Getting in

Eighteen, and identification every time

The legal age for gaming in Finland is 18. Everyone entering the casino shows photo identification at the door on every visit, and that includes guests staying in the house as well as anyone who has walked in off Vaakaranta. You'll be asked again on the second night, even though the same person checked you the night before. A passport, a national identity card or a Finnish driving licence will do; a photograph of a document on a telephone won't.

The dress code is light but it is applied: a collar and closed shoes, with outdoor coats left on the rail at the top of the stair and nothing larger than a small shoulder bag. At the tables, telephones stay in pockets.

The staff working the floor set the limits. They aren't published in advance and they can't be negotiated at the table, but if you ask the inspector before you sit down, you'll get a straight answer.

How limits work here

On the floor

What the staff do on the floor

Each table has limits for the evening. The staff on the floor decide them, they can differ from table to table, and they can change between sittings. We don't keep a list on the website or at the door, because it would be out of date by Thursday, so please ask the inspector before you sit down.

Staff will also hold a limit for you if you want one, whether that is a cap for the evening or a reminder at an hour you choose, and a break at a fixed time if you'd like one. Tell them when you arrive and it is written down. It isn't discussed with anyone else.

We give no credit and cash no cheques, and there is no cash machine on the floor or in the gallery. If you've run out, the evening is over, and staff won't help you find more.

Anyone who wants to stop can arrange self-exclusion in person at reception, downstairs, at any hour reception is staffed. It takes a short conversation and a form. The duty manager handles it and keeps it confidential, and it takes effect at the door the same evening. It is always done here, face to face.

What this site is not

Nothing on this website is a game

Aurelinna Casino is a land-based casino inside a hotel in Turku, and play happens only in the gallery, in person, during opening hours. This website describes the building.

The website has no online games and takes no bets, stakes, deposits, withdrawals or payments of any kind, and you cannot open an account on it. The casino has no app, no partner platform and no other site. If anyone offers you any of those under our name, it is not us.

Our position on gaming, what staff are trained to notice and what else they can arrange is set out on the Responsible Gaming page.
